This event is part of the Global Startup Battle, which means there'll be over 100 cities around the world all hacking away, with support and big prizes from companies like Google Entrepreneurs.

Jess Falkenthal

Jess loves edtech startups! She’s spent the last 9 years working with universities, youth development programs & education nonprofits. Jess has directed digital marketing campaigns to increase student growth & retention, built communities to support women in technology, and designed online learning products to support informal learning for youth. Prior to her recent move to San Francisco, Jess was the Associate Director of Interactive Marketing & Recruiting for the Online MBA Program at the Kelley School of Business and volunteered as a local leader for IxDA, Startup Weekend, 4-H & a few geocaching groups. Her former startup FundShips represented Startup Weekend Bloomington in the 2011 Global Startup Battle. She is passionate about online learning, user experience, community building, design & geocaching.

Andrew Hargadon

Director at Davis Roots

Andrew Hargadon holds the Soderquist Chair in Entrepreneurship at the Graduate School of Management at UC Davis. He’s Faculty Director of the Child Family Institute for Innovation & Entrepreneurship and teaches, blogs, and writes about innovation and entrepreneurship and serves on the board of directors of numerous startups. Before that, he worked as a product designer at Apple and taught in the Product Design program at Stanford University.

David Chan

SVP of Sales and Marketing at Engage3

David Chan is the SVP of Sales and Marketing at Engage3, a big data retail intelligence company helping shoppers save time and money in-store, online and on the go. Their innovative shopping navigator (ShoppingScout) drives dynamic, real-world transactions for every day consumable items.

His career spans enterprise software, hardware, Internet and mobile solutions. In previous roles, David was Global Marketing Director for Hewlett Packard’s Internet Software Business, Senior Director of Oracle’s Alliances & Sales channels in the Americas and Asia Pacific regions, and Vice President of Global Business Development for Everypath, Inc., one of the most sought after pre-IPO mobile companies of its time, building strategic alliances and raising $20M (total $100M+) in financing and venture capital.

Jack Crawford Jr.

General Partner at Velocity Venture Capital

Jack is a Sacramento native whose 20-year career in local “company building” has evolved from CPA to entrepreneur to venture capitalist. As a CPA with PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Jack saw a wide range of businesses and was inspired to start his own – including one of the first Internet Service Providers in Sacramento. Through the 1990’s, Jack secured his reputation as a serial entrepreneur in founding three more software companies. His efforts were recognized in 2000 when he was chosen as the Entrepreneur of the Year by the Money Hunt television show which was broadcast in 160 US markets.

Since 2000, Jack has focused his energy on venture capital as the critical component of company building for seed and early-stage technology companies. Jack launched Velocity Venture Capital in 2005 to provide capital for entrepreneurs focused on information technology products that will positively impact the world. Jack is now combining his front-line entrepreneurial operating experience with venture capital investments to help drive the success of some of the most promising companies in Northern California. Jack and the Velocity fund management team work closely with company founders to fine-tune strategies, build management teams, recruit key members of the Board of Directors and Advisory Boards, grow revenues, raise capital, and facilitate a positive exit.

Oleg Kaganovich

Partner and Co-Founder at Black Emerald Capital Partners

Oleg Kaganovich is a general partner and co-founder with green investment group Black Emerald Capital, and a venture partner with early stage venture capital firm DFJ Frontier. He is an early/growth stage company adviser, investor, operations executive, and emerging markets consultant with an interest in businesses within energy, environment, sustainability, food & agriculture, IT, media, healthcare, and consumer products. He recently returned from Saudi Arabia, where he served as the founding Director for Venture Capital and Entrepreneurship at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). While there, he led the Seed Fund, and launched both the Entrepreneurship Center and Early Stage Venture Fund activities.

Mr. Kaganovich was the adviser for the development and launch of the DFJ VTB Aurora Russian Innovation and Nanotechnology fund. Prior to his work within the DFJ network of venture funds, Oleg was the founding CEO of the Sacramento Area Regional Technology Alliance (SARTA), where he developed the infrastructure, branding and momentum to help startup entrepreneurs in undercapitalized regions advance their businesses.

Oleg began his venture capital career as an Associate with Sun Microsystems venture group, where he had responsibilities for deal sourcing, due diligence and deal negotiation. Prior to that, he was an associate at The Black Emerald Group, formerly a Wall Street merchant bank and investment group, focused on green and sustainability investments. Oleg began his professional career as an entrepreneur, launching a computer/technology integration company out of his dorm room at the University of Michigan. Oleg received his MBA from Columbia Business School, studied international relations at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, and received a BS in International Business from Aquinas College. He presently sits as a board director for GreenwiseJV, SARTA, board observer for new materials company Intematix and until recently for solar financing company Tioga Energy

Jeff Louie

Capsity Community Activator

Jeff Louie is a Sacramento native and UC Berkeley Alumni. In 2008 he founded Capsity, Inc., a CA Benefit Corporation that serves as a hybrid model of business development and community engagement space for entrepreneurs and business professionals. In 2012 Capsity moved into unique position as an owner occupied space with a 4500 sq. ft. commercial building in Sacramento, CA. Today Capsity, Inc. is home to 70+ businesses and community based organizations.

As a serial entrepreneur Jeff has started several companies and projects revolving around video media & marketing, events management, and mobile app development. He has 13 years of broad experience across multiple industries including information technology, education, media, and real estate. Currently Jeff is working on a Startup mobile app platform built on geo-fencing technology which is aiming to launch in 2014.

Jeff also participates in several local community based organizations at different capacities. He serves as a Board member on the Benefit Corporations Standards Institute, Inc., committee member on Sacramento Region Community Foundation's Community Impact Committee, and as a Committee member on Metro EDGE's

Robert Gregoire

Founder and CEO

Bob has spent his career leading and executing change within organizations with an emphasis on strategic positioning and leadership. Having held executive positions in both the for-profit and social sectors, he has been involved in the formation of multiple companies and has interacted with over one hundred organizations. In 1995, Bob founded a national outsourcing firm that he later sold to CH2MHill, a global engineering firm. As CEO of that entity, he focused on the delivery of innovative outsourcing strategies for Fortune 500 companies and led the company to a dominant position within the industry.
As Founder and CEO of Viewco, an Interventional Leadership firm, Bob focuses on the diverse needs of a client base that spans the for-profit and social sector arenas. He specializes in addressing the challenges that are inherent in small- and mid-sized organizations through the application of best practices gleaned from his robust leadership and Interim CEO experience. He currently serves on multiple boards and is President of the Sacramento Entrepreneurship Academy.

Taylor W. Bentley

Taylor is an associate in the firm’s Corporate group. His practice focuses on the representation of both public and private companies, including corporations, limited liability companies and partnerships. Taylor’s experience includes working with companies of all sizes, from new business start-ups to publically traded companies and new investment funds to closed investment funds. He regularly represents businesses with regard to licensing, distribution and other contracting matters. He has represented companies in regulatory compliance, mergers and acquisitions, corporate financings, fund formation and a broad array of other business transactions.

Taylor earned his J.D. from Columbia Law School. While a student, Taylor served on the Columbia Business Law Review. During law school, Taylor was an extern to the Honorable Judge Naomi Buchwald for the U.S. District Court, SDNY. He also interned for the Networks and Technology Enforcement Section of the Antitrust Division at the Department of Justice in Washington D.C.

Prior to joining the firm, Taylor worked at the New York office of a large international law firm. In his spare time, Taylor enjoys theater, traveling and running.

Before founding JamHive he worked as a Senior Consultant at Deloitte and has a comprehensive background in technology and business development.

Jason Hsu

Lead Mobile Developer at Engage3/ShoppingScout

Jason Hsu is the new Director of Mobile Development at Engage3 in charge of revamping the ShoppingScout experience for iOS and bringing it to the Android market. A recent graduate from UC Davis, Jason worked at Intel for two years holding roles in CPU Development, Cloud Engineering, and Product Management on internal mobile applications while attending. He is also an alumni of two Startup Weekends placing 3rd at the Tri-Valley event.

Jason's specialty is bringing technical expertise to non-technical founders of new startups. As an adviser for several startups in the Bay Area and Davis, Jason helps these teams define and develop features, timelines and budgets for web and mobile products as well as managing development teams and raising seed investment from angel investors who he also advises on technical matters. Jason is very passionate about technology and helping startups succeed.
